I have come up with a plan, a new plan for academic satisfaction, career success, and the possibility of staying home with my children when they are little (no I don't have children yet).
I am posting it here partly because it amuses me, partly because I wonder what you all think, and partly because I'd like to read it again in a few years and see how much it has changed.
step 1 finish masters program in May. One class left!
step 1b write scathing review about lameness of program in graduate packet which probably no one will read
step 2 edit*
step 3 edit*
step 4 take a serious break from the academic world. 3 or 4 years at least.
step 5 PhD Use fatherly advice and professory knowledge to get assitantship, use fatherly wallet to pay for program.
step 6 use awesome flexible PhD candidate schedule to take care of my own children while they are little. Avoid daycare/nanny expenses, and paranoia about strangers interacting with my children. I have a lot of irrational fears about leaving children with daycare "professionals" FSU says its good for them. we can battle it out later.
step 7 stop reliving my mothers life.
step 7b stop proving my parents right about everything.
I guess marriage will be inserted in there somewhere, but that part of the plan is unclear as of this very moment.
